Meet the Team

Joy Selby

Managing Director

From initially beginning my career in Retail starting as a Checkout Operator advancing to Store Manager within 6 years. I then entered self-employment as a DVSA accredited Driving Instructor for over 20 years. During this time, I developed a successful Chauffeur driven Limousine Company. It was during this time that I was approached to start a career in Education.

I started in Education as an Assessor delivering NVQ's and Apprenticeships in a number of sectors. I then started Positive Futures with Derek in April 2016 with the aim of supporting people in to work and their career progression.

Whenever I have any spare time you can usually find me, with my friends, on the dancefloor as I am an avid line-dancer.

Derek McNichol

Operations Director

I started my career in Accountancy and had my own practice. I then started working in the Taxi Industry in 1997 and worked through the ranks (no pun intended!) through to Management. I then moved in to the Education sector in 2007 where I worked as a Classroom Based Trainer going on to become an Assessor and then in to Management.

I started Positive Futures (N.E.) Limited with Joy Selby in April 2016. The company has gone from strength to strength with new Partners asking to work with us. My main ambition is to develop Positive Futures into the the type of company that people want to work with and work for.

I bring several good qualities to the business, none of which involve IT!

Malcolm Yorke

Commercial Director

My working life started straight after school with a Youth Training Scheme (YTS) at a Local Authority and over the next 20 years progressed my career. I was part of a team that created a Training Department where I found my perfect job, helping people better themselves. I then left the Authority and set up my own Training Company, delivering Apprenticeships & Qualifications to help people achieve their potential.

I have worked in Education for the past 10 years and I take pride and pleasure in what I do. A wise man once said to me ‘everyone deserves and needs a chance to start or enhance their career’ and that is what I thrive to do.

I merged Enhance Training Academy with Positive Futures (N.E.) Limited in August 2017. The company has gone from strength to strength, achieving new contracts and business. We are building a company with very strong foundations.

Charlie Thompson

Director of Quality

I began my working life at Easington District Council where I progressed to the position of Benefits Manager. Following the amalgamation of the councils in County Durham I thought that this was the perfect opportunity to change direction and so I became involved in training.

Since 2009 I have focussed on adult education and training, firstly as an assessor and then moving on to an IV role. Currently, in addition to my role with Positive Futures, I undertake EV and SEV roles with national awarding bodies. My role takes me across the UK covering various areas of training (including taxis, management etc), but my specialism lies within the housing and property sector (including benefits).

Away from the office, I enjoy running, cycling and spending time with my family. I am an avid caravaner and like to get away whenever possible.

Richard Egan

Contracts & Compliance Manager

I have worked in Education for over 10 years in a number of roles ranging from IT Systems, Quality & Compliance and Contracts Management. I have supported a number of Private Training Providers & Colleges through OFSTED, ESF, SFA and EFA Audits as a Consultant.

I have delivered a range of Training and Qualifications (from Level 2-5) in IT User , IT Professional , Business Admin , Customer Service , Team Leading & Management , Retail and Functional Skills English, Maths and ICT.

In my spare time, I enjoy taking the family out to parks and to visit family. I also do Website Design though my own Design Company.

Rachel Wilson

Personal Assistant to the Director's

I started at Positive Futures as a Compliance Officer, then Personal Assistant and now I work in Business Engagement. This includes setting up meetings with new clients, networking events, social media and marketing.

The best thing about my role is meeting people who share with us a genuine passion for helping others.

My background is in compliance and audits but I originally worked for the NHS as a systems trainer and NVQ assessor. I studied Business Studies at university and have recently enrolled on a management qualification.
